Tackling the stigma of mental health issues

University of the West of England

The University of West of England (UWE Bristol) needed a partner to operate as part of the media team, supporting its activity around important and complex issues which are impacting the higher education sector.

The idea

Our brief focused on participation, research and mental health and wellbeing, all of which are key communications drivers for the university. We took a leading role in launching and supporting its mental health strategy, used to position UWE Bristol as a leading national voice on the issue.

What we delivered

We supported media relations, key messaging, speech-writing and the preparation of Vice Chancellor Steve West’s presentation at the launch. Other activity has included creating three communications strategies, setting up a reporting process for the leadership team and supporting a visit by Universities Minister Sam Gyimah to the university in June, which was extensively reported by the media.

This has resulted in UWE being referenced positively in national media, on Channel 4 News, BBC Radio 5 Live, The Guardian and regional media since the launch. The launch of the strategy alone generated 45 items of media coverage with a potential reach of more than 7.5m.
