Victoria joined Social as an account executive at our Manchester HQ in early September. Here she talks about her first few weeks and what attracted her to a career in PR.

It’s hard to believe that I’ve been at Social for more than a month already, as it only seems like yesterday that I was writing my dissertation.

I first became captivated by the interesting world of Public Relations while training as a journalist at the University of Lincoln. This fascination led me to secure two placements at PR agencies, one in Edinburgh and the other in Manchester, during the summer of my second year at uni.

I knew immediately that I wanted to work in PR. I discovered that I could ultilise my journalistic skillset and combine it with the fun and collaboration of working in a team, across a variety of clients.

Once I finished university, I started searching for a job in PR almost immediately. Job-hunting in such a competitive industry was not easy, but I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. After receiving several rejections (and sometimes no response at all), I finally received a call from Social to come in for an interview.

Fast forward almost two months and here I am. I could not be happier. Working as an Account Executive is such a varied role where no two days are the same.

It feels amazing to work in a business that is continually growing, with staff who are clearly dedicated to ensuring they go above and beyond for their clients. Already in the short time I have been here new clients have been added to an already impressive roster.

There is some routine to my role, and every day I take on more and more responsibility. My day-to-day tasks include collating and analysing coverage for clients, issuing press releases and carrying out research. I have also assisted on photo and video shoots and have visited clients off-site.

It can be daunting being the new girl, coming into an environment where people already have established friendships and careers. Yet, from day one, I have felt welcomed by the team.

It’s so interesting to work in an integrated agency where you’re working alongside colleagues from the agency’s different teams including PR, marketing and creative.

Having worked in both hospitality and retail since the age of 16, I assumed that there would always be a divide between those who are just getting their foot on the ladder and those who are sitting at the top of it.

However, at Social, this could not be further from the truth. It’s so refreshing to come in and work alongside people from every level of the business, from the Chief Executive to all the different Directors. Five weeks in and I already feel like a massive part of team Social.

I feel so lucky to be working here. The work that we do as an agency does make a difference to so many groups of people in society and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me at Social.
